In the heart of championing climate change negotiations, the STREVOW project has been holding a dynamic and inclusive dialogue series titled “Her Voice Counts,” which aims to empower and amplify the perspectives of women with disabilities (WWDs) in climate change negotiations. The diversity of experiences, challenges, and priorities offers a tapestry of insights that, when woven together, will create a comprehensive and balanced approach to climate solutions.
This dialogue series is part of the larger Strengthening the Voices of Women with Disabilities to Actively Participate in Climate Change Policy and Negotiations (STREVOW) project, being implemented by Inclusive Climate Change Adaptation for a Sustainable Africa (ICCASA) in partnership with the Centre for Minority Rights Development (CEMIRDE).
Dialogue Objectives
To achieve its goals, the Her Voice Counts dialogue series aims to:
- Amplify the voices of WWDs by creating a safe and inclusive environment where WWDs can freely express their thoughts, concerns, and ideas related to climate change adaptation, mitigation, and resilience-building efforts.
- Raise awareness of the specific challenges faced by WWDs and how these challenges are compounded by the effects of climate change.
The Her Voice Counts dialogue series encourages collaboration and partnerships among diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, activists, researchers, and organizations, to create more inclusive and effective climate change strategies. The insights and recommendations generated through the dialogue series are channeled into advocacy efforts aimed at influencing climate policies and negotiations at local, national, and international levels.
The workshops and training sessions within the series also contribute to capacity building, equipping WWDs with the skills and knowledge needed to actively engage in climate change discussions and decision-making processes.
How It Works
The Her Voice Counts dialogue series fosters a multifaceted approach to ensure meaningful participation and engagement. This includes:
- Regular dialogue sessions that provide a platform for participants to discuss their experiences, challenges, and ideas related to climate change.
- Storytelling and art as powerful tools that enable participants to engage their creativity through visual arts, sign language, and disability-friendly audio formats to communicate their perspectives, allowing for a deeper understanding among diverse audiences.
- Online outreach through digital platforms, extending the dialogue beyond the series and enabling participants to connect, share resources, and continue discussions.
- Collaborative workshops that engage WWDs on their role in climate change negotiations, encouraging skill-building, fostering leadership, and enhancing their ability to influence policy and advocate for change.
Overall, the Her Voice Counts dialogue series represents a powerful step towards bridging the gap between climate change policies and the inclusion of women with disabilities. By providing a platform for dialogue, education, and collaboration, this initiative is contributing to a more comprehensive and equitable approach to addressing climate-related challenges in Africa.
